Back in 1861, the only hitting stats that mattered were runs scored (R) and hands lost (HL), which was originally the term for outs. The runs and hands lost were then used to create averages, known as the average over. Back then they used a remainder. For example a player who scores 6 runs in 3 games has a run average of 2. A player who scores 7 runs in 3 games has a run average of 2,1 (the ,1 stands for the remainder of 1). Decimals came into play for averages about a decade later. The only stat that mattered for pitchers was the win.
